About ERU

Royal ERU is an independent Dutch cheese manufacturer, which has been irrevocably linked to Woerden, a city in the green heart of the Netherlands. The Ruijs family established its cheese business here in 1824 and it has remained faithful to this location ever since.

Royal ERU has a passion for cheese and is specialised in the manufacture of quality processed cheese products. Over the years, ERU has captured the hearts of many families, and with its large range of cheese products ERU will always be a familiar sight at breakfast or lunch anywhere.

Innovation also plays an important part at ERU, and the wishes of the consumer take centre stage.
As a result, ERU always comes up with product innovations that are both healthy and tasty.

Our History

The original ERU cheese shop was founded in Woerden in 1824 by Mr Egbert Ruijs (E RU), a true cheese connoisseur, and started out just selling pieces of cheese and whole cheeses. During the Twenties, a lot of research took place into various ways of melting cheese. After a number of successful melting experiments, the first large ERU factory opened in 1938, and producing processed cheese on a large scale became reality. Processed cheese became so popular, that ERU soon started concentrating mainly on producing cheese spread.

In 1999, on the company's 175th anniversary, the Dutch Queen Beatrix granted ERU the "Royal" status, which truly crowned many years of craftsmanship. The royal crown has been part of the ERU logo ever since. In 2007, Royal ERU introduced a new, modern logo containing the royal crown, which seamlessly ties in with ERU's core values.
